For the producers who aren't convinced the family could make an entertaining comedy, no explanation is necessary. Besides, it may be well-mannered comedy, but it's a comedy nonetheless. The Clamshell boys are pleasant and likable, though their personalities don't really mesh well (let alone harmonize), and it's far more relaxed than a film like The Hangover.
It's also a warm, homespun comedy. None of the film's laughs feel forced or out-of-place, but they do tend to have the feel of being the creation of real people, which is why the film feels so heartfelt. It doesn't feel as though Judd Apatow had just made the Clamshell Boys, he made the Clamshell Boys.
That's most evident in the film's closing sequence. The scene is a comedy of errors, which can be used to compliment the film or diminish it. It is by no means a terrible scene, and it's far funnier than one might expect, but it's clear it wasn't the idea of the film to end on a funny note. In fact, the filmmakers don't seem all that eager to laugh, which makes sense because they were making a movie about a family. And while it makes sense to treat a comic family as a wacky comedy, it doesn't work that way here.
Which makes the ending appropriate, as the Clamshell Boys are both a family, a social club, and a business.
